The Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Government announced on the 16th that it operates the "Provincial Citizen Safety Insurance System," which provides up to 20 million KRW to support the livelihood stability of citizens who have suffered personal injuries from disasters and accidents.
In operation since the first half of 2019, all residents registered in the province (including registered foreign nationals) are automatically enrolled in the Provincial Citizen Safety Insurance without any separate application process, and the province and respective municipalities cover the insurance premiums in full.
Coverage can be claimed alongside any individual personal medical or other insurance policies, and compensation is provided regardless of where the accident occurs nationwide (including overseas, subject to terms and conditions).
Coverage details vary by municipality but generally include death from natural and social disasters, as well as death and permanent disability caused by explosions, fires, and collapses, public transportation accidents, and agricultural machinery accidents.
Tailored to regional characteristics, incidents such as drowning accidents, dog bite injuries, robbery-related injuries, and wildlife damage are also covered.
Up to 20 million KRW is paid out for death and permanent disability resulting from natural disasters and drowning. Claims can be filed by the insured or bereaved family members by submitting the necessary documents directly to the relevant insurance company within three years of the accident date.
The insurance company determines eligibility through a document review (conducting an accident investigation if necessary) and transfers the insurance payout directly to the insured's personal bank account.
Regarding payout records, over the past three years, approximately 10,000 provincial residents have benefited from around 10 billion KRW in insurance claims.
Further details, including specific coverage information, can be found on the resident's municipal website or on the Disaster Insurance 24 portal (www.ins24.go.kr).
Shin Il-ho, the Provincial Safety Planning Officer, stated, "When our citizens experience unexpected misfortune, the Provincial Citizen Safety Insurance will serve as a reliable pillar of support. We will do our utmost in our promotional efforts and operations to ensure no resident misses out on these benefits due to a lack of awareness."
