The Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Technology Institute announced on the 13th that it has officially launched an 'Eco-Circular Technology Development' research project aimed at the reutilization and industrialization of discarded agricultural by-products.
This research was initiated in response to the recent growing interest in the potential use of agricultural by-products in high-value-added industries such as textiles, fashion, cosmetics, and lifestyle materials.
The five-year research project, running until 2029, is a joint effort involving the Rural Development Administration's National Institute of Crop Science and agricultural technology institutes from eight provinces nationwide.
These institutions plan to standardize collection and pre-processing technologies for agricultural by-products, which currently face limitations in industrial application due to issues like a lack of raw material standardization, an unstable supply chain, and supply-demand imbalances between regions.
They also plan to focus on establishing a stable raw material supply system to create a foundation that various industries, including startups, can use.
The Chungcheongnam-do Agricultural Technology Institute will strengthen cooperation with related institutions and startups to build a systematic process that connects by-product collection to upcycling and industrial use.
The annual amount of agricultural and food by-products discarded in Korea reached approximately 5 million tons in 2019, with disposal costs exceeding 800 billion won annually.
Researcher Lee So-yeon of the Agricultural Environment Research Division stated, "This research will re-evaluate agricultural by-products as valuable resources for the region." She added, "We will contribute to the realization of sustainable agriculture and a circular economy."
