The Chungnam Institute of History and Culture (Director Kim Nak-jung, hereinafter referred to as the Institute) announced that it will host the "2025 Chungnam Cultural Heritage LA Special Exhibition" at the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (Director Lee Hae-don) for approximately six weeks, from June 26 to August 4. This exhibition, themed "Baekje: The Hidden Cultural Heritage of Korea," will showcase diverse content, primarily focusing on Baekje's World Heritage sites and representative tangible and intangible cultural heritage from Chungnam.
This exhibition was planned as part of a global promotional effort to attract international tourists, coinciding with the "2025-2026 Chungnam Visit Year." It aims to widely promote the value of Chungnam's historical tourism resources, including its Baekje and Seonbi cultures, to the world.
The exhibition will take place in both the permanent and special exhibition halls of the Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles. It will feature 35 tangible cultural heritage items (63 pieces), including Chungnam's representative cultural assets like the Gilt-bronze Incense Burner of Baekje, the Mokhwajadangi chess board, the gold diadem ornaments from King Muryeong's Tomb, an inkstone bestowed by King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty, and calligraphy by independence activist General Kim Jwa-jin. Additionally, 17 intangible cultural heritage items (35 pieces) such as Jisung craft and Daengdaengi, 36 traditional textile craft works (59 pieces) like Jogakbo (patchwork bojagi) and triangular pillows, and 10 contemporary sculpture pieces (10 items) including a dancer and lucky pouches will be on display. Visitors can also experience the essence of Chungnam's cultural heritage through various attractions and experiences, including content linked to intangible cultural heritage and promotional videos.
The opening ceremony, held at 7 PM on Thursday, June 26, will be attended by key figures such as Kim Nak-jung, Director of the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture; Kim Young-wan, Consul General of Korea in LA; Lee Hae-don, Director of the Korean Cultural Center LA; cultural and art figures from Chungcheongnam-do and the LA area; as well as the Chairman of the Korean National Association Memorial Foundation and the Chairman of the Chungcheong Homelands Association. The event will include exhibition viewing and a reception.
Furthermore, as a pre-program linked to the special exhibition, a lecture titled "Baekje, The Hidden Cultural Heritage of Korea" will be held. This lecture aims to broaden the understanding of Baekje's history and culture among the local Korean community and the American public.
The Institute also plans to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with organizations such as the Chungnam Culture and Tourism Foundation, Korea Tourism Organization LA Branch, Korean National Association Memorial Foundation, and the Chungcheong Homelands Association of the Southwest USA. This collaboration will not only promote the special exhibition but also lay the groundwork for the donation of overseas cultural artifacts and cultural exchange cooperation.
Various promotional activities will also be carried out. The Institute plans to promote Chungnam's cultural heritage through interviews with broadcast and newspaper outlets in the Americas, meetings with influencers, and outreach to local organizations and groups like King Sejong Institutes.
In addition, exhibition and tourism promotion booths will be operated at Korean-related institutions and major events, including the "House of Korea" in San Diego (July 4-12), the World Taekwondo Hanmadang in Anaheim (July 17-19), and the Korean Education Center in Los Angeles (July 25-August 3). These efforts aim to showcase the beauty of Chungnam's cultural heritage and promote the Chungnam Visit Year concurrently.
Kim Nak-jung, Director of the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture, stated, "The United States is the region with the third-highest number of visitors to Korea after China and Japan, and it's also where the largest number of overseas Koreans reside (1.43 million out of 16.37 million foreign visitors in 2024, and 2.61 million out of 7.08 million overseas Koreans). This special exhibition in the LA area is expected to serve as an opportunity to introduce Chungnam's history and culture not only to the overseas Korean community but also to local visitors, thereby contributing to their visits to Chungnam."
