Chungnam's first dormitory for foreign seasonal workers has been completed, marking a significant first step towards securing a stable workforce and improving living conditions for workers.
According to the province, the completion ceremony for the Cheongyang-gun Foreign Seasonal Worker Dormitory was held on April 30 in Cheongso-ri, Cheongnam-myeon, Cheongyang-gun.
The completion ceremony, attended by over 200 people including Provincial Administrative Vice Governor Jeon Hyeong-sik, Cheongyang County Mayor Kim Don-gon, and 30 Laotian workers who moved into the dormitory on April 29, proceeded with a report on the project's progress, a tape-cutting ceremony, and a tour of the dormitory.
This dormitory was selected for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' 'Agricultural Worker Dormitory Construction Support Public Contest Project' in 2022. It was built with a project cost of 5.4 billion won, covering a total floor area of 775.32㎡ across two floors.
The worker living space consists of 10 rooms, including eight 4-person rooms (34.81㎡ each) and two 1-person rooms (30.24㎡ each), accommodating a total of 34 people.
The monthly rent and deposit for all rooms are 300,000 won each.
This dormitory also features a shared kitchen for cooking and dining, a laundry room, and a management office, and is equipped with electronic appliances such as washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
Seasonal workers living in their respective rooms can use the shared kitchen and laundry room for their meals and washing needs.
To ensure efficient management and operation of the dormitory, Cheongyang-gun has signed a business agreement and consignment contract with Jeongsan Nonghyup, which operates the Rural Labor Brokerage Center (public type).
At the completion ceremony, Vice Governor Jeon Hyeong-sik expressed his expectation that "the issue of insufficient seasonal worker accommodation and poor living conditions has continuously been raised, and the Cheongyang dormitory will greatly contribute to improving workers' living environment and protecting their human rights."
Vice Governor Jeon then welcomed the foreign workers entering the dormitory and introduced, "In addition to introducing seasonal workers, Chungnam Province has been promoting friendship and cooperation with Laos by supporting fire trucks, ambulances, and computers." He added, "This dormitory will enhance Korea's image and create a virtuous cycle that helps attract seasonal workers."
Meanwhile, Buyeo County, which was selected in the same public contest as Cheongyang County, is investing 6.5 billion won to renovate the foreign seasonal worker dormitory in the former Mint Corporation staff housing in Yeomchang-ri, Buyeo-eup, aiming for completion in June.
The Buyeo dormitory will consist of 18 buildings with a total floor area of 2,880㎡, accommodating a total of 112 people.
Dangjin City, selected in the second public contest in 2023, plans to invest 3.6 billion won to construct a four-story dormitory with a total floor area of 1,164㎡ and a capacity for 40 people in Jogeum-ri, Daehoji-myeon, by December next year.
The province attracted 7,804 foreign seasonal workers last year, and plans to attract over 9,000 this year to alleviate labor shortages during the busy farming season.
