\r\n\r\nintroduction
\r\nThe Chungcheongnamdo Artist-in-Residency presents a relay series of solo exhibitions by artists from its second cohort. This exhibition series showcases both representative works created prior to the residency and new works produced after moving into the studio by the eight resident artists, who began their residency in April and will continue their artistic practice through March of the following year. The relay exhibition provides an opportunity to reflect on the significance of artistic production within the residency while considering the future directions of the artists’ practices during the remainder of their stay.
Lee Hwayoung, the seventh artist in the second cohort relay exhibition, has consistently developed new media works that reconsider the relationships between the individual and the collective, as well as between life and art. His practice spans a wide range of media—including objects, sound, video, and installation—and unfolds primarily through site-specific installations that respond to the historical and contextual layers of particular places.
Reconnect: Nagwon Sikdang (樂源識䣊) brings together the artist’s personal artistic practice and the regional archives accumulated by the URBAN ARCHIVE ART PROJECT TEAM NODE TREE under the name of “Nagwon Sikdang,” a former gathering place for artists in Eumnae-dong, Seosan during the Japanese colonial period. This relay exhibition is the result of a process of connecting aesthetic fragments gathered while drifting through the West Coast region, centered on Seosan’s B District (Jeokdol Bay), during the residency period. Rather than reproducing a specific locality, the exhibition seeks to reveal states of sensibility formed through temporary dwelling and repeated observation.\r\n
Rather than integrating place and memory into a single, closed narrative, Lee Hwayoung rearranges them as conditions in which new relationships may emerge, performing an act of “reconnecting” past contexts from the perspective of the present. Reconnect: Nagwon Sikdang (樂源識䣊) extends beyond visual outcomes, unfolding as a condition-based practice through rituals, rehearsals, and performances that orchestrate moments in which place, sound, body, and memory identify and resonate with one another.\r\n
Artist’s Note
\r\nI take as the core driving force of this exhibition the flow of Aak–Junggoje–Gamuak that I encountered while moving along the paths of ancient vocal traditions (Goje) in Chungcheongnam-do. This is not an attempt to reconstruct a music-historical lineage. Rather, it begins with the question of how the sensory structure emerged in which song (ga), dance (mu), and instruments (ak) collectively opened a pan—an open field of encounter. This work focuses on experimenting with and tuning that sensory structure within the conditions of the present.
\r\nThrough this approach, what I provisionally term New Gamuak does not signify a new genre that inherits or transforms the formal conventions of traditional gamuak. Instead, it is a contemporary methodology that seeks to reconnect with a state prior to the fixation of song, dance, and insm—when art emerged together within the open conditions of the pan. New Gamuak does not reproduce specific repertoires or techniques; it begins by designing the conditions under which heterogeneous artistic languages can meet.
\r\nIn this work, collaboration does not imply a simple combination or fusion of genres. Indie music, experimental music, sound art, Shim Hwayeong–style Seungmu, and contemporary dance are not juxtaposed as autonomous forms. Rather, they operate as subjects that temporarily suspend their boundaries in order to enter the pan. Instead of advancing toward a predetermined outcome, they share moments in which sound, body, and space sensorially probe one another, allowing relationships to emerge.
\r\nAccordingly, what matters in New Gamuak is not the level of completion of individual works or performances. The central concern lies in how the artistic network formed among the participants becomes perceptible and activated. Here, “network” does not refer to an organization or a list of collaborators. It denotes the very process through which artists with different backgrounds and languages recognize and respond to one another within a shared time and place. In this process, sound becomes dance, movement becomes rhythm, and space itself operates like an instrument.
\r\nIn this sense, New Gamuak is less a performance format than an event in which a contemporary artistic network is rendered visible at the level of sensation. It is not an act of transporting tradition into the present, but a performative practice that re-experiments—under today’s conditions—with modes of artistic encounter that had already been operating in the past yet remained uninstitutionalized: the logic of the jang (field), where people gathered, opened a pan, and shared art together.
